Our water is limited, let's use it carefully.

Due to COVID-19 measures, we are adhering to hygiene rules to the fullest, but we need to act carefully without forgetting that our water is limited.

If we fail to achieve this, we may experience difficult days starting from the beginning of the summer months. This will be challenging both in terms of the course of the disease and hygiene requirements, as well as in terms of overall quality of life.

Water Levels in Dams May Trigger Alarms

In many of our cities, especially Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir, the water levels in dams are at alarming levels. The dam levels, which are significantly below those of previous years, may decrease to dangerous levels during the summer months with the increase in consumption.

Treatment Facilities May Face Difficulties

The increase in water consumption may also lead to unexpected negative impacts on sewage and wastewater treatment systems. Sewage systems and wastewater treatment systems are designed and operated according to capacities determined by the quantity and quality, in other words, the amount of wastewater and pollution loads. Lines and facilities that are constantly exposed to excessive flow may encounter problems. Moreover, many of these treatment facilities are biological wastewater treatment plants. The excessive use of disinfection chemicals can have toxic effects on them, causing some to become partially or completely inoperative. This may lead to further pollution of receiving environments.

Excessive Use of Chemicals May Disturb Ecological Balance in the Long Term

At this point, it is crucial to emphasize how much and which chemicals municipalities use while disinfecting streets and avenues. The excessive and unnecessary use of highly toxic chemicals may have a very minimal effect against the virus, while the contamination of surface and groundwater with these chemicals could lead to longer-term and harmful consequences. Again, excessive chemical use could harm many beneficial species necessary for ecology instead of the virus, disrupting the ecological balance and potentially strengthening some dominant harmful species. The excessive disinfection process on streets and avenues can be likened to launching a missile to kill mosquitoes, which is entirely unnecessary.

Our Personal Hygiene and Consumption

Let's Be Careful with Our WaterDuring personal hygiene measures, let's consume less water and keep the taps closed while washing our hands. Let's open the valves and faucets minimally. By placing filled water bottles inside toilets and tanks, we can reduce the amount of water wasted with each flush. We don't need to wash our clothes every day. The ways the disease spreads are known, but let's use our washing machines more carefully. Rinsing dishes before washing them or washing them by hand can increase water consumption by up to ten times, so let's avoid doing that.Without thinking, "What difference does it make from what I consume?", let's all reduce our water consumption. Let's protect both our natural resources and our environment, as well as our budget.Source: https://www.dirilispostasi.com/gundem/suyumuz-sinirli-dikkatli-kullanalim
