From Newspaper to Plant

You may have heard of Japan's newspaper that has turned into a plant, 'The Mainichi Shimbunsha.' If you haven't, I suggest you take a look at this article.

We are encountering the concepts of circular economy and zero waste more frequently now. At this point, let's talk about an application that took place in Japan. Known as a technology giant, Japan also draws attention with its green practices. One of the country's best-selling newspapers, Mainichi, is produced from 100% recycled and plant-based materials. If you bury the newspaper in the soil after reading it, it turns into a plant. Since the inks used in the newspaper are vegetable-based, they do not harm nature; on the contrary, they serve as fertilizer. This method may also be suitable for composting.

The Mainichi Shimbunsha collaborated with Dentsu Inc., an agency recognized for its environmental efforts, to launch such a project. With this project, The Mainichi Shimbunsha's circulation has increased by 10%.

It should be noted that this sustainable newspaper has a significant impact on reducing its carbon footprint. To touch upon what carbon footprint means, it refers to the damage that individuals and companies leave on the world in terms of energy use related to the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2), which is released into the atmosphere through the use of fossil fuels and is cited as a major contributor to global warming, causing the formation of greenhouse gases.

Since our consumption habits in daily life are quite excessive, such applications create a field of hope.

With the hope and wish to see such practices widespread for a more sustainable environment in our country as well.
