Are you curious about how to create temporary storage areas? Do you ask yourself why a waste area is necessary? Or has your company been fined for dumping waste in vacant lands? You can find all the information about waste areas in this blog post.
In this period when everyone is waiting for the final episodes of Game of Thrones, you may be wondering how to create a waste area. Don't blame yourself? If you need such an area, you can first analyze your company's current situation by following the steps below.

Temporary Storage Area for Hazardous Waste
Roadmap for Your Hazardous Waste
For your hazardous waste, you should first follow the steps below;
Identification of hazardous waste generated by your company,
Estimating the monthly amount of waste generated,
Selecting a suitable area for your waste area,
Hazardous waste can be stored on-site for a maximum of 6 months. A waste area capable of storing your waste for 6 months needs to be constructed.
The hazardous waste area you will create within your facility must have the following features determined by the Ministry of Environment;
The hazardous area must be separate from the facility and buildings, located away from human traffic, in a place suitable for licensed vehicles to approach for hazardous waste,
All necessary precautions must be taken against potential fires (such as having fire extinguishers, etc.),
At the entrance of the section where hazardous waste is stored; there must be signs stating “Attention! Hazardous Waste” and “Temporary Storage Area for Hazardous Waste”,
The area must be enclosed, with a lockable entrance door (kept under lock), and keys must only be held by authorized personnel,
There must be a blind channel and blind well to address potential spills in the Hazardous Waste Storage Area, the ground slope must direct towards this blind channel, and the blind channel must be positioned within the waste area to avoid being affected by precipitation,
Waste must be stored separately in tanks and containers, with a sign indicating the type of waste on each compartment where a waste type will be stored,
The sections where hazardous waste will be stored must be constructed with roofs and enclosed on all four sides to protect against precipitation (fencing made of wire mesh is not sufficient for protection against rain).
It is not considered appropriate because it does not provide protection from the hazards.
By creating a waste area with these features, you can store your hazardous wastes in this area for a maximum of 6 months. After storing your wastes, you can send them to licensed disposal/recovery facilities.

Non-Hazardous Waste Temporary Storage Area
Roadmap for Your Non-Hazardous Wastes
We talked about hazardous wastes, but what about non-hazardous wastes! Don't think that we just throw them in the municipal trash and ignore them because they are non-hazardous. Now let's examine the steps we need to take for non-hazardous wastes. For your non-hazardous wastes, you should first follow the steps below;
Identification of non-hazardous wastes generated by your company,
Estimating the monthly quantity of generated wastes,
Determining a suitable area for your waste area,
Non-hazardous wastes can be stored within the facility for a maximum of 12 months. A waste area large enough to store your wastes for 12 months needs to be created.
The non-hazardous waste area you will create within your facility must have the following features determined by the Ministry of Environment;
The non-hazardous waste area must be separate from the facility and buildings, located away from human traffic, and suitable for licensed vehicles that will pick up hazardous wastes to approach,
The area must be enclosed, with a lockable entrance gate (kept under lock), and the keys must only be held by authorized personnel,
Wastes must be stored separately in tanks and containers, with a sign indicating the type of waste on the partition where each waste type will be stored,
The sections where non-hazardous wastes will be stored must be constructed with a cover and enclosed on all four sides to protect against precipitation,
The area must have a sign stating “Non-Hazardous Waste Temporary Storage Area” written on it,
By creating a waste area with these features, you can store your non-hazardous wastes in this area for a maximum of 12 months. After storing your wastes, you can send them to licensed disposal/recovery facilities.
After creating the waste area, there are a few more steps you need to take.
There is one more step. But keep your curiosity until my next post. In my next post, I will talk about; How to obtain a temporary storage permit for waste areas? Is a storage permit required for non-hazardous waste areas? What do the inspectors who come to your facility check in your waste area? I will discuss these topics.
